Some of Anchorage's most competitive tech-oriented kids went head-to-head Saturday -- playing with LEGO bricks. Hundreds of fourth through ninth-graders competed in the first LEGO League Challenge robotics competition of the year.
Getting in on the action this year were several dozen members of the Girl Scouts. Since the Girl Scouts started getting involved a few years ago, the number of girls involved in the overall competition has grown exponentially.
Organizers say the competition may look like all fun and games, but the kids are learning team-building and problem-solving skills, and also preparing for the future.
“Each team that comes here today is by definition a winner, because they've taken on a project, they've determined what it is they're going to define as success for them, and then they've gone forth to try and meet that challenge,” said volunteer Dave Patterson.
“It is so much fun -- right guys? It is so much fun, we love it, I'm coming back,” said participant Mary Wright.
This is the LEGO League Challenge’s 11th year in Alaska.
