Man Mauled by Bear in Eagle River

Man Mauled by Bear in Eagle River (July 22, 2012)

A man was mauled by a bear in Eagle River Sunday afternoon, on a trail off of Mariah Drive.

He was hiking with his dog on private property near a power line when he encountered four brown bears, including a mother bear and her three cubs.

According to Anchorage police, the bear injured the man's leg in the attack, but he was able to walk to emergency responders.

Medics took about an hour to reach him and he was transported to the hospital.

This incident is the second bear mauling in the area this year. In May, another man was mauled by a brown bear off Mariah Drive.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is posting signs nearby to warn others of the possibility of encountering bears in the area.
