The outbreak of meningitis associated with a steroid medication has not spread to Alaska, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
New England Compounding Pharmacy has recalled all the products compounded at and distributed from a facility of its where the medication originated.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said some of the recalled products made their way to Alaska, but the CDC said none of those products contain meningitis.
The FDA, the CDC and the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy are investigating the outbreak and potential risk of contamination, according to a release from the Alaska Dept. of Health and Social Services.
“Alaska has had no reported meningitis cases associated with the implicated product,” said Dr. Joe McLaughlin, a state epidemiologist.
Alaska providers who received the recalled medicated have been notified to return them.
The outbreak is associated with pain medication injected into the spine. On Sunday, the outbreak had spread to nine states with 91 cases and seven deaths.
