On Monday, January 21, 2013, Wasilla police responded to a two-vehicle collision on the Parks Highway at the Knik Goose Bay Road intersection shortly before 1 p.m.
A press release update from the Wasilla Police Department has confirmed that the crash resulted in 4 injured individuals and one fatality.
Initial investigation revealed that a 2003 Ford pickup, driven by 33-year-old Paul Owens Jr. of Wasilla, was traveling northbound on the Parks Hwy. at the Knik Goose Bay Road intersection. Owens attempted a left turn westbound onto Knik Goose Bay Road when he turned into the path of a 2000 Ford Expedition, driven by 18-year-old Cassidy Moffet of Wasilla. Moffet was driving southbound on the Parks Hwy.
"Both vehicles sustained heavy damages," according to WPD spokesperson Kathleen Johnson. "Moffet as well as three of the passengers in her vehicle were transported to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center for evaluation and treatment. Zacharia Scharlow, age 18, was airlifted to Providence Medical Center in Anchorage in critical condition."
On January 22, 2013 the WPD was notified that Scharlow passed away at Providence Medical Center due to his injuries sustained during the collision.
