U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski says federal budget cuts are coming and programs dear to Alaskans - highway and defense construction money and rural health dollars - may not be spared.
The budget control plan approved last month requires a 12-member bipartisan congressional committee to recommend by Thanksgiving ways to reduce the federal deficit from 2012 to 2021.
If Congress fails to approve a plan for at least $1.2 trillion in savings over the 10 years, automatic spending cuts will go into effect.
Murkowski in a speech Tuesday in Anchorage to Commonwealth North said every recommendation made by the bipartisan committee will be scrutinized.
She urged people not to key in to one aspect of a budget reduction plan but to be open-minded and see what comes together as a whole.
