ANCHORAGE, Alaska -

There is no tsunami threat for Alaska after a strong earthquake in the South Pacific near the Santa Cruz Islands, according to the Alaska Tsunami Warning Center.

The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 8.0 and struck around 4:12 p.m., Tuesday, Alaska time.

The Palmer-based Tsunami Warning Center issued its final statement shortly before 6:30 p.m. Alaska time and also said that there was not tsunami threat for British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and California.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center also issued a statement saying there was no tsunami danger to Hawaii.

A tsunami generated by a powerful undersea earthquake off the Solomon Islands has damaged dozens of homes in that South Pacific island chain.

However, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says that tsunami warnings for elsewhere have been cancelled.
