Gov. Sean Parnell has named the Pat Kemp to the position of state transportation commissioner, a job he's held on an interim basis since October.
Kemp is a University of Washington graduate who worked in construction in Alaska for the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities for 30 years, retiring in 2006.
After retirement, Kemp lived in Juneau, operating a private engineering office until returning in 2011 as deputy commissioner for Highways and Public Facilities.
Parnell's office says in a press release that Kemp is the first commissioner of the department to be born and raised in Alaska and the first to work up completely through the ranks.
