A former Anchorage police officer pleaded guilty in federal court Wednesday morning to charges of passport fraud and false claim of U.S. citizenship.

Rafael Mora-Lopez claimed, for years, to be Rafael Espinoza but was caught earlier this year when applying for a passport.

Court filings last month said Mora-Lopez's wife had been a neighbor of the real Espinoza in Mexico. Authorities say Rafael Espinoza is a legal U.S. citizen.

Mora-Lopez worked as a police officer until his arrest in April.

His sentencing is set for August 25. Judge Timothy Burgess did not change Mora-Lopez's bail conditions. He remains on home confinement.
