A rock blast may have killed a worker at the Kensington gold mine near Juneau Wednesday, according to a preliminary federal report.
KINY radio in Juneau reports that the Mine Safety and Health Administration is investigating the death of 30-year-old Joe Tagaban.
Preliminary information indicates Tagaban was near a hole he’d previously drilled which intersected a stope, a space previously cleared of rock and sometimes backfilled with mine tailings. A blast propelled rock through the drill hole, striking Tagaban.
The investigation is continuing.
