ANCHORAGE, Alaska—
The Army says a Fort Wainwright soldier was killed in Afghanistan’s Kandahar Province Wednesday by the detonation of a pressure-plate improvised explosive device.According to U.S. Army Alaska spokesperson Lt. Col. Bill Coppernoll, 26-year-old Sgt. Rodolfo Rodriguez Jr. served as an infantryman with the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division at Fort Wainwright.
Rodriguez, from Pharr, Texas, joined the Army in March 2006. He graduated from Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Benning, Ga. and served for three years with the 2nd Battalion, 505th Infantry at Fort Bragg, N.C. He arrived in Alaska in March 2010.
Rodriguez also served two previous combat tours of duty in Iraq, from November 2006 to October 2007 and from December 2008 to November 2009.
Rodriguez’s next of kin have been notified. He is the thirteenth Fort Wainwright Stryker to die in Afghanistan this year.
