An Anchorage senator wants greater accountability for the way state legislators spend money for their offices.

Democratic Sen. Berta Gardner has introduced legislation that would require that all office expenses to be accounted for. SB34 also would require that any unspent funds revert to the state general fund.

The Legislative Council last month opted for a non-accountable plan for office allowance accounts. That means, expenses aren't run through Legislative Affairs, allowing lawmakers to administer their own accounts, but the agency is required to take out taxes and deductions.

Pam Varni with Legislative Affairs says the way it had been working was that lawmakers would submit expenses and get a check for any funds left over, with taxes and reductions taken out.
