Farmers in the Kenai Peninsula will be getting some help from the federal government to keep bears off their property.

A division within Alaska's Department of Agriculture will pay farmers to build electric fences to keep bears out. The program, which starts in October, is part of the Wildlife Habitat Initiative Fund.

The fences will surround farming structures that attract bears like beehives, livestock pens, and chicken coops.

A Department of Agriculture state biologist says the service will conduct site visits and develop management plans with farmers. Overall, the program is designed to reduce bear-human interactions.
