Voters in Wasilla have decided to remove City Councilman Steve Menard from office.
Here are the unofficial results of Tuesday’s recall election:
"Shall Steve Menard be recalled from the Office of City Council?"
Yes: 216 70.1%
No: 92 29.9%
The recall election was called because of a petition drive by the Conservative Patriots Group after an incident in August of 2011 when Menard traveled to Sitka for a business trip.
A bill from the Sitka Westmark Hotel detailed damage to Menard’s room, including vomit on the carpet, urine on furniture, a burned mattress and evidence of smoking.
In a phoner interview Tuesday night after the results were announced, Menard said "obviously I'm disappointed with the low turnout and that it didn't go my way, but through this whole process I respect the decison of the people I serve...so if they wanted to make a change I'll honor that and move forward with the City of Wasilla and with my life, also.
When asked about the aftermath of the hotel room incident that lead to the recall election, Menard said "it's a hard lesson for me to learn publically, obviously, but I'm a better person for it coming out at the other end of it and I just look forward to moving forward and putting this behind me and trying to redeem myself.".
The Wasilla City Council plans to certify the special election on Monday February 13th. Menard will be immediately removed from office when the election is certified.
Menard had 2 more years on his term.
