Anchorage police have identified the man shot during a late-night weekend robbery attempt in Spenard. Robert Kost of Anchorage, 23, was killed just past midnight Sunday at the 800 block of West 23rd Avenue.
Another suspect was injured during the incident, and police say an investigation is in its early phases. Police say there were multiple shell casings found on the floor.
“They demanded something they demanded money and valuables and other items of this nature,” said APD Sgt. Slawomir Markiewicz. ¿¿¿We know that several people came in. One was shot and killed. We are still looking for other people who came with him.¿¿¿
Officials say that officers arrived and found Kost already dead, lying just below the stairs of the building. Detectives are investigating whether his shooting was self-defense.
Also during the robbery, police said one of at least four tenants present was seriously injured by a blunt object and was taken to a local hospital.
Neighbors in the area, including Todd Rohr, say they are shocked.
¿¿¿It was a very quiet neighborhood. Some dead end streets, so not a lot of traffic and also we have a senior center right next door here. So it's a pretty quiet neighborhood,¿¿¿ said Rohr.
No neighbors say they heard any gun shots during the night, but several residents describe the building as very loud and noisy.
Detectives said there were no drugs found at the scene and they're continuing the investigation.
An autopsy on Kost was scheduled for Monday.
No arrests have been made at this time.
