Strong Earthquake Near Adak (West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center / September 26, 2012)

Update: Seismologists revised the magnitude of the earthquake to 6.4 instead of 6.9 and the quake was about 21 miles south of Tanaga Volcano.

A strong earthquake shook Wednesday afternoon 80 miles southwest of Adak, Alaska, according to a preliminary report by the Alaska Tsunami Warning Center.

Officials said a tsunami is not expected along the West Coast and no advisory is in effect and non-damaging sea level changes may be experienced in these areas.

The quake struck around 3:40 p.m. Alaska time in the Andreanof Islands region with a depth of 25.2 miles.

There were no initial reports of damage.
