Spc. Calvin Mathew Pareda, 21, of Fayetteville, N.C. died Saturday in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, according to Army spokesperson Lt. Col. Bill Coppernoll.

Pareda, who died from injuries sustained from an improvised explosive device while on a dismounted patrol, was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry at Fort Wainwright.

Two other soldiers from the brigade were wounded in the same incident.

Coppernoll says Pareda served as an infantryman, both joining the Army and arriving in Alaska in 2010.

Army officials released word of Pareda's death to Alaska media on the same day they announced the Sunday death of fellow Stryker Sgt. 1st Class Johnathan B. McCain, 38, who was killed by injuries sustained in a separate IED attack in Kandahar province.

Pareda is the sixteenth Fort Wainwright Stryker to die in Afghanistan this year, and McCain is the seventeenth.

Both men's next of kin have been notified.
