The University of Alaska Board of Regents voted 8-2 to change the University’s non-discrimination policy to include sexual orientation.

University President Pat Gamble says after discussions with students, "I was inspired to look at the national norms and what's going on nationwide. We're not breaking trail here, there are lots of others in the nation. I think for this university the positive energy it will generate is not insignificant."

Friday was the second day of the Board's meeting, where students and others testified on the issue.

The board also approved a motion on the proposed sports arena for the University of Alaska Anchorage. The motion allows UAA to do traffic flow and parking studies for two different design options for the arena. They want the analysis first before approving a specific size for the building.

The regents also approved a bachelor's degree in film and an associate's degree in outdoor leadership at the Valdez campus.
