The following school districts have closed their schools today, January 14, due to road safety concerns caused by the weather.
The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District posted a notice on their website around 9 p.m. Sunday saying that all schools in the Central Peninsula area will be closed Monday for "safety concerns." To see the entire list of schools in that area click here.
Shortly before 4:30 a.m. Monday, Anchorage School District spokeswoman, Heidi Embley, confirmed that all schools within the Anchorage district will be closed today, including all ASD-sponsored after-school activities.
Grace Christian School spokeswoman Cynthia Hatter informed Channel 2 via phone call that the private school would be closed today.
Anchor Lutheran School, another private school in Anchorage, also closed this morning due to road conditions.
According to the Matanuska-Susitna Borough District Facebook page, Glacier View School is the only open school in the area. All other schools in the district are closed.
The University of Alaska Anchorage's campuses located in Anchorage, Eagle River, and on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson are also closed this Monday due to unsafe driving conditions.
Alaska Pacific University's campus will also be closed today, as well as the day classes at Alaska Career College in Anchorage.
The Charter College campuses in Anchorage and Wasilla will be closed for morning classes, an assessment of the weather later in the day will determine whether evening classes will be held.
According to Elizabeth Kane, prinicipal at the Adult Learning Center in Anchorage, the center will be closed Monday due to weather conditions.
