ANCHORAGE, Alaska

Many people in Anchorage slid out of their homes Monday and glided into work after warm weather melted a majority of the snow and turned side streets into ice skating rinks.

A sign in midtown flashed 47 degrees around lunchtime.

Mary Lee Miller had little metal studs attached to the bottom of her sneakers near Westchester Lagoon.

“They’re a lot cheaper than a broken hip,” Miller said.

Russ Kaiser slid across the sidewalk to get to his pick-up truck in West Anchorage.

“This is ridiculous,” Kaiser said, “the side roads are nothing but a glare of ice.”

BobbieLee Briggs, who also works in the Westchester area, said she saw several people walking on the streets instead of the sidewalks because there was less ice on the streets.

“Be slow and careful,” Briggs warned Kaiser as he glided across the road.

The Anchorage School District canceled classes Monday. After-school activities were also canceled. The University of Alaska Anchorage also closed its campuses in Anchorage, JBER, and Eagle River.
