A new alternative plan by the Bureau of Land Management would allow mining in a portion of the White Mountains National Recreation Area north of Fairbanks.
The BLM says the Alternative D plan is not its preferred alternative for land management of the 1 million acre area.
The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner says the plan is causing concerns about the compatibility with an area used by skiers, hunters and others.
Darcie Warden with the Alaska Wilderness League says the area is just starting to recover from previous mining activity.
The alternative is a supplement to the Eastern Interior Draft Resource Management Plan that BLM released last year.
Comments to that plan challenged the exclusion of mining, saying BLM had misinterpreted the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act.
