A South Birchwood area resident says her Dachshund was attacked and injured by a wolf early Sunday morning.

Otto and Theresa McLean say they called dispatchers shortly before 5 a.m. to report that a wolf had attacked their Dachshund, Sandy.

The dog had just been let out of their home when the McLeans heard a yelp; they opened the door again and Sandy ran inside.

"We could see white, larger than a dog, white very skittish," Theresa McLean said.  "As soon as the door opened it bolted."

McLean says Sandy is shaken up and "a little bit sore" after Sunday's attack, with bite marks on two of her legs and an ear.

The McLeans reported the sighting to the Anchorage Police Department, and inquired about shooting it if it returns.

"If a wolf or any other wild animal is attacking a domestic animal, like a dog, that is specifically permitted under state law that the wild animal can be killed in defense of property," Assistant Area Biologist for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, David Battle said. "A domestic animal is defined as property under state law."

Editor's note: After an interview with the dog's owners, the account of the wolf attack has been changed from initial details provided by APD.
