A man was charged with second-degree murder early Friday, after Anchorage police say he fatally stabbed a male relative in the chest during "a night of heavy drinking" Thursday.
APD spokesperson Anita Shell says police received a report at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday of an assault with a knife at an East Anchorage trailer on the 200 block of Newell Street. Responding officers found the stabbed man, 23-year-old Henry Ningeok.
“Medics arrived moments later and declared Ningeok dead at 10:45 p.m.,” Shell wrote in a Friday statement on the case.
Investigators questioned several people in the trailer at the time, including 49-year-old Donald Leroy Williams.
“Witnesses say that Ningeok and (Williams) were drinking at Williams’ trailer,” Shell wrote. “At some point during the evening, the two got into a physical altercation which ended in the stabbing of Ningeok.”
Shell said it is unclear how the men were related, but said they may be cousins. Williams was taken into custody early Friday morning and was arraigned that afternoon at the Anchorage Jail. Emotions were high from a few people in the gallery during the arraignment and the father of Ningeok phoned in.
When the judge asked if he had anything to add, he replied "I do not hope he gets out. I don't want him out because he hurt my son, my family and everybody else in my family," the victim's father said. "Donald, why did you do this?"
"I'm sorry," answered Williams.
Police describe Ningeok’s death as the city’s sixth homicide this year.
