A man drowned Saturday evening while swimming at a Kenai city park, according to city officials.

Kenai City Manager Rich Koch says he was told by police that Robert Johnson, 18, drowned in a pond at Daubenspeck Family Park, north of the local Walmart and east of Marathon Road, at about 6 p.m.

The Peninsula Clarion says responders retrieved Johnson from the pond at Daubenspeck Family Park Saturday and transported him to Central Peninsula Hospital, where he was declared dead.

Kenai police Sgt. Scott McBride says police were notified that a male had been under water for more than five minutes. A witness who tried to help Johnson was hindered by cramping in the cold water.

Koch says the city will release a full statement on the drowning Tuesday. He expressed condolences on behalf of the city to Johnson’s family for what he called a "tragic accident."
