KODIAK, Alaska—

A man involved in a deadly street race has pleaded guilty in an agreement with prosecutors.

The Kodiak Daily Mirror reports 21-year-old Markryan Portillo pleaded guilty Friday to criminally negligent homicide and assault in the October death of 19-year-old Austin Van Long. He had been facing second-degree murder and assault charges.

Sentencing was set for April 22.

Police say William Mecham and Portillo were engaged in a high-speed street race last October across Fred Zharoff Memorial Bridge when the accident occurred. Long was a passenger in Portillo's vehicle.

As the two vehicles drove side-by-side across the bridge, a truck tried to cross the bridge in the opposite direction. Mecham swerved to miss the truck but hit Portillo's vehicle.

Mecham earlier received a five-year jail sentence in the death.
