A man in Sutton is facing a rising threat as the Matanuska River eats away at the land under his home.
Rising temperatures in the Mat-Su have caused glacier melt that's feeding into the Matanuska River, causing its banks in Sutton to erode under the home of Sonny Johnston.
He was outside Friday, moving items from his junkyard business and sending them to scrap. He says there's nothing else to do with a lot of the tires and cars on his property because he's afraid the Matanuska is going to swallow them up within the next few days.
And then there's his house.
He says he's already had to move it once, but now there's nowhere for it to go, and he says the prospect of losing it all is now staring him in the face.
"I can't even take a day off to go do anything because I have to stay here to make sure I don't lose anything to the river -- it's a constant battle," said Johnston.
Channel 2 spoke with Mat-Su Borough emergency management officials Friday, who said they sent a team out to take pictures and assess the extent of the erosion in Sutton. They haven't yet activated the borough's flooding task force because it doesn't appear any other homes are in danger.
