ANCHORAGE -

Anchorage police responded to a robbery Sunday at an east-side retail store where the suspect pulled a knife.

Police say just before 8 p.m. officers responded to a report of a man, later identified as 24-year-old Jonathan Fortner, shoplifting from the Walmart off DeBarr Road.

When Fortner was confronted by store staff, he reportedly pulled a knife before fleeing on foot, police say.

Police located Fortner a short time afterward leaving a nearby convenience store.

Fortner was arrested and charged with two counts of assault in the third degree and one count of first-degree robbery.

Police found roughly $100 worth of stolen merchandise on Fortner.

During his arrest, police say Fortner admitted he had the stolen merchandise and that he also has a heroin problem.
