Alaska Flags to be Lowered for Ex-State Lawmaker Montgomery
Gov. Sean Parnell has issued an order for Alaska state flags to be lowered Thursday in honor of former state Rep. Joe Montgomery, who recently died.
Montgomery was 95 years old when he died in Anchorage on Oct. 5.
He was a Republican who represented Anchorage in the state House from January 1979 to January 1983.
Officials say Montgomery arrived in the state by steamship in the early 1940s.
After serving as a B-17 pilot during World War II, Montgomery worked for the Anchorage School District. In that job he held various positions, including teacher, principal, counselor and superintendent.
