ANCHORAGE -

What caused Skagway’s Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) dock to sink Thursday remains a mystery as crews worked to stabilize its submerged remains on the seafloor.

Oil booms were deployed to capture any potential contaminates, officials report, while the exact cause for the submersion will continue to be investigated. Department of Transportation and AMHS officials continue to salvage what they can of the submerged dock while exploring repair options.

Alaska Marine Highway officials have canceled all sailing to Skagway for the next two weeks as a precautionary measure. Ferry service to Haines will continue as normal, though. Interim alternative ferry services to Skagway are still being explored.

As the salvage operation continues updates will be posted at FerryAlaska.com, officials note, and AMHS staff will be contacting passengers affected.
