A report of a burglary Wednesday afternoon escalated into a manhunt for two suspects in Midtown.
Anchorage police say they responded to a burglary in South Anchorage home around 2:48 p.m. near the 6100 block of Romania Drive.
Two men were seen fleeing from the home in a full size pick-up truck. Police say a computer check of the truck found it to be stolen.
That initiated a prolonged pursuit of the suspects that drew more than 20 units.
Shortly before 5 p.m. APD officers spotted the suspects’ truck in a hotel parking lot near 34th Ave. and Old Seward. The men ran from officers, and police gave chase on foot.
One suspect was taken into custody, but the other carjacked a vehicle from a man and sped away, crashing into a police cruiser and causing extensive vehicle damage.
Officers followed the suspect to an area near Togiak Circle, where they found the carjacked vehicle abandoned and badly damaged.
Police set up a perimeter and searched the area, eventually locating the suspect and taking him into custody peacefully shortly before 7 p.m.
Police said two dogs were used as the search progressed. No shots were fired but APD Sgt. Michael Kerle said the suspects were believed to be armed.
Police said two patrol cars were damaged in the pursuit but neither suspects nor officers were injured during the chase.
