JUNEAU -

A bill proposing an inflationary component for the Base Student Allocation drew strong responses during the Senate Education Committee hearing on Friday.

The bill, sponsored by Sen. Berta Gardner, a Democrat from Anchorage, ties the basic student allocation to inflation rates provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The bill also calls for an additional increase of $404 per student in the BSA as opposed to Gov. Sean Parnell's proposed BSA rate increase of $85 per student for next year.

Sen. Bert Stedman, a Republican from Sitka, responded that imbedding an inflation component into the budget would cause the state to quickly lose control of the budget in the future.

Sen. Mike Dunleavy, a Republican from Wasilla, added funds might be taken from adult education to raise the BSA.
