JUNEAU, Alaska -

John Binder has been named a deputy commissioner in the state transportation department.

Binder will succeed Steve Hatter, effective Jan. 7. Transportation department spokesman Jeremy Woodrow says Hatter resigned for a private sector job.

According to a news release, Binder joined the department in June as operations manager for the Division of Statewide Aviation. His previously worked as a systems analyst planner for the National Airspace Defense Program and served in the U.S. Air Force for 21 years before retiring. As deputy commissioner, he will oversee the aviation division as well as the state's international airport system.
