ANCHORAGE, Alaska -

North Slope Borough police are continuing their investigations of a 13-year-old boy’s Tuesday shooting death in Barrow, as well as an unrelated standoff with a suicidal man on the same street.

According to North Slope Borough Police Chief Leon Boyea, few further details are available about the boy’s Tuesday shooting on the 5200 block of Karluk Street at about 3:40 p.m., which was initially reported as a juvenile male who had shot himself.

While an initial NSBPD statement Wednesday said the boy, who had suffered an apparent gunshot wound to the head, may have been accidentally shot by another boy, Boyea emphasizes that the case is still under investigation, with no names released thus far.

“No charges with the state have been filed at this point,” Boyea said.

The case is not linked to a standoff with a suicidal man who was threatening to shoot himself at another residence on the 5200 block of Karluk, reported to police at about 2:45 p.m. Officers successfully took the man into protective custody after about six hours, without further incident or harm.
