A storage building at a North Pole cement plant caught on fire Monday and is considered a total loss.
A large plume of black smoke could be seen from Fairbanks after the fire was reported late Monday morning at the HC Redi-Mix cement plant along the Old Richardson Highway.
There were no injuries, and the cause of the fire at the metal-sided building wasn't immediately determined.
North Star Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jeff Tucker tells the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner that workers were grinding material inside the building, and the sparks might have ignited the interior wall coatings.
Construction materials and a front-end loader stored inside the building also were burned.
