Municipality of Anchorage officials say a Downtown breezeway has been a health and safety issue for years -- and now they’re taking action to close it off.

The breezeway, between the old 4th Avenue Theater and the First National Bank, often reeks of urine and human waste due to people using it as a public restroom. As a result, the municipality is building a fence to keep people out.

City officials wouldn’t say exactly how much the project will cost, but say the fence is being built using maintenance funds.

So far, just the sides to the gates have been installed. The remaining pieces of equipment should arrive sometime next week, according to city officials.
