ANCHORAGE -

The court-martial of a Coast Guardsman facing charges of rape and sexual contact, initially scheduled for last summer, is now set to begin Monday.

In a Friday statement, the Coast Guard says proceedings for 26-year-old Petty Officer 3rd Class William Bisel -- a maintenance technician with Air Station Sitka’s public works department -- will begin in Juneau at 8 a.m. Monday.

“The court-martial was originally scheduled to begin on July 30, 2013 but was postponed due to procedural issues,” officials wrote. “Petty Officer Bisel is charged with two violations of Article 120 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which involve sexual assault.”

The commander of the Coast Guard’s 17th District, Rear Adm. Thomas Ostebo, referred the case for trial after a February 2013 Article 32 hearing, a Coast Guard procedure similar to a grand jury hearing.
