Fairbanks police say a 55-year-old pedestrian was struck by a car and seriously injured in a weekend crash.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports the woman at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday was crossing the Old Steese Highway when she was struck by a slow-moving car.

The pedestrian suffered a head injury and was flown out of Fairbanks for medical treatment.

Fairbanks police were nearby for the closing of a bar.

Police say the 58-year-old car female driver was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and felony assault.

Officer Rick Sweet says the driver failed a field sobriety test and refused a breath-alcohol test.

However, the driver by Monday had not been charged and was released from Fairbanks Correctional Center.
