Fairbanks school children are getting a day off from studies.

A storm that dropped freezing rain and heavy snow led to cancellation of classes Wednesday in the Fairbanks North Star Borough.

School district information officer Bill Bailey tells the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner that the cancellation was made based on what's already occurred and what's predicted for the afternoon.

The National Weather Service says freezing rain turned into snow but freezing rain is likely again Wednesday afternoon.

A travel advisory was issued Wednesday for the area and the freezing rain was making roads slippery.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks remains open.
