ANCHORAGE -

High water is preventing Alaska Railroad workers from repairing a section of track washed out earlier this week.

Passenger train service will not be restored Thursday as first thought. Instead, passengers will take a bus between Anchorage and Seward. Other passengers taking the train to either Spencer or Grandview whistlestops will have their journeys end at Whittier. One coal train scheduled for Seward will be delayed.

The washout occurred on an 80-foot section of track near Portage, at Skookum Creek.

Railroad officials hope to resume passenger service Friday, but warn the cancellations may continue into the weekend while repairs are being made.
