Most Southcentral Alaska Power Restored After Windstorm Outages
Southcentral Alaska electric utilities say most areas' power has been restored after high winds and major outages hit the region overnight Sunday.
The Associated Press reports shortly before noon Monday that Matanuska Electric Association spokesperson Kevin Brown says most customers' power was restored by 8:30 a.m., with Chugach Electric spokesperson Phil Steyer reporting most customers back online by late Monday morning.
The majority of those affected were served by MEA, with the association's Facebook page saying a Palmer outage had left “thousands of customers without power.” Posts since 3 a.m. Monday listed other outages, including one affecting roughly 900 Butte customers and one affecting about 700 customers in Eagle River, with other outages reported in Birchwood. MEA spokesperson Kevin Brown says the outage's first power losses were reported at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday.
In a Monday statement, Chugach Electric spokesperson Phil Steyer says “dozens of outages” were reported on the Anchorage Hillside and the Hope area, with dispatchers receiving reports since about 3 a.m.
Steyer says that roughly 200 to 250 Chugach Electric customers, most of them affected by an outage at the Hope substation, didn't have power restored until 9:20 p.m. Monday. A smaller outage in Anchorage was unrelated to the storm, however.
"At 11:45 a.m. a car-pole accident near International Airport Road and the Old Seward Highway cut power to a few dozen commercial locations," Steyer wrote. "The metered locations affected by this outage are on the south side of International between the Old Seward and C Street."
Power to those affected was restored just after 8:30 p.m. Monday.
Chugach is tracking power outages on a map posted on its homepage.
Anchorage Fire Department dispatchers say crews responded to some small wood fires caused by downed power lines early Monday, but no major forest or structure fires.
To report an outage, call MEA at 696-7697 in Eagle River or 746-7697 in Palmer and Wasilla. Chugach customers can report outages at 762-7888 in Anchorage or 1-800-478-7494 outside Anchorage.
