A jury on Tuesday found 20-year-old Kayla Johnson guilty of running down 18-year-old Tevin George while drunk and leaving the scene of the wreck.

George suffered a traumatic brain injury during the July 20, 2013, collision on Huffman Road.

While Johnson denied the charges and claimed a friend was in fact behind the wheel, the jury disagreed and handed down a guilty verdict on each of the six charges brought by the prosecution.

The convictions include counts of first-degree assault, tampering with evidence, driving under the influence and driving without a valid license.

"We're hoping to get across that you shouldn't be able to get away with drinking and driving and doing harm to other people," said Michael Oustigoff, George's stepfather. "By no means is that right."

Sentencing is scheduled for July 8 at 2 p.m.
