Alaska Native leader Byron Mallott is officially launching his run for governor Tuesday in his hometown of Yakutat.
Mallott is running as a Democrat for the seat currently held by Republican Sean Parnell. Mallott says he sees his bid, in a way, as part of his journey as an Alaskan.
Mallott says he initially dismissed suggestions he run, insisting he was content with his work in the public and private sector. But he says the more he thought about it, the more he saw a run as a continuation of his life so far, one that he says has been spent in Alaska and has been about Alaska.
However, he says the campaign isn't about him. It's about the future of Alaska.
