Firefighters in the Mat-Su Valley say all four occupants of a house north of Wasilla safely escaped a fire there Monday night, but their home is a total loss.
Central Mat-Su Emergency Services' on-scene commander for the fire, Jim Keel, says the fire was first reported at about 6 p.m. at North Huckleberry Lane and Sage Road, near East Schrock Road.
First responders reported that the home was 40 percent engulfed in flames, with crews quickly evacuating the residents. Keel says the fire was brought under control in about 40 minutes, with crews checking hot spots in the attic as of 10 p.m.; the cause of the fire is tentatively attributed to smoking, but that hasn't been confirmed.
Otto Feather, Central Mat-Su's deputy director for fire, was also at the scene. He says firefighters suffered a few minor injuries such as scrapes during the call, and hailed their performance Monday night.
"I'm extremely proud of our firefighters," Feather said.
Keel didn't immediately know whether the displaced residents were receiving assistance from the Red Cross, but does say they have local contacts.
"They do have a lot of family in the area," Keel said.
