MEA Outage Restored after Eagle River Equipment Failure
Matanuska Electric Association says equipment failure at its Eagle substation caused a power outage mid-day Monday, which lasted for just over four hours.
Around noon, the power outage affected 14,000 customers in the Eagle River, Birchwood, Churgiak, Peters Creek and the area from Eklutna to ML&P’s Plant 2 on the Glenn Highway.
“Initial reports indicate an equipment failure at MEA’s Pipple Substation north of Eagle River,” said Kevin Brown, MEA spokesperson.
11 schools in the Eagle River and Chugiak area used backup generators due to the outage. Eagle Academy Charter School encouraged parents to pick up their children early, according to Anchorage School District officials.
Shortly after 4 p.m., MEA restored power to all affected customers.
