Alaska State Troopers say the death of a baby boy brought to a Fairbanks hospital is under investigation.

According to a Monday AST dispatch, troopers were informed at about 11 p.m. Sunday that the 18-month-old child’s mother had brought his body to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.

AST spokesperson Megan Peters says few details -- including how, when and where the mother reported the child died -- are immediately available about the investigation, which was prompted by the initial circumstances of the incident.

“People don’t usually bring children dead to a hospital, so we’re looking into it to find out why the child died,” Peters said.

The child’s body is being sent to the state medical examiner’s office in Anchorage for an autopsy.
