A search and rescue effort late Thursday night ended with the loss of a Palmer man, Alaska State Troopers say.
Troopers received a report of a missing person at 10:32 p.m. from an address on Palmer-Fishhook Road in Palmer. Two men had gotten lost in in the Hatcher Pass Management area and attempted to cross the Little Susitna River. One of those men, 74-year-old Yong Soo Kim, fell and was swept down river.
Palmer Fire and Rescue personnel were on scene at 10:36 p.m. and located Kim 50 meters downriver from his last known location. Kim was found unresponsive, and resuscitation efforts were attempted.
Kim was transported to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead Friday at 12:35 a.m. The state Medical Examiner’s office took possession of the body, and next of kin have been notified.
