JUNEAU, Alaska -

Gov. Sean Parnell is taking Sen. Mark Begich to task for supporting the federal health care law.

In a letter Wednesday, the Republican governor says Begich should "do what is right for Alaskans" and vote to repeal or "substantially change" the law as it relates to insurance choices.

Parnell says the Democratic senator cannot stand by and watch the "destruction of private insurance as an option," particularly when he says Begich "helped create this unfolding catastrophe."

Begich said he appreciates Parnell's concern and hopes he will direct that "to the 40,000 Alaskans currently being denied affordable healthcare as a direct result of his refusal to accept the Medicaid expansion."

Parnell is expected to announce soon whether to expand Medicaid under the law soon.

Both men face re-election next year.
