JUNEAU -

Governor Sean Parnell plans to request $1 million in state funds to help preserve the records of the late Ted Stevens.

Timothy McKeever chairs the Ted Stevens Foundation. He said in a release that Stevens' papers "are the history of virtually every issue the state faced from the late 1960s to 2008."

Parnell's office says the money would be used to preserve, digitize and allow public access to the records, notes and photographs of Stevens, who served Alaska for decades in the U.S. Senate. Stevens died in a plane crash in 2010.

The release says the money also would act as a catalyst for efforts to secure more private funding.

A Parnell spokeswoman says the funding request will be made in the capital budget.
