FAIRBANKS, Alaska -

A national outdoor retailer has announced plans for a Fairbanks location.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports REI will open next spring in the location of the former Fred Meyer store at the corner of Old Steese Highway and College Avenue.

The 30,000-square-foot retail store will include bike and ski shops, repair services and offer classes.

An exact opening date wasn't announced, but the company expects to hire about 50 people.

The company says in a release that REI is a member cooperative with 132 stores nationwide with more than 5 million members. An REI location has operated in Anchorage since 1980.
