The Anchorage Fire Department responded to an East Anchorage residence early Friday, where a fire had broken out.

A trailer on the 5800 block of E. 4th Avenue was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived around 3:30 a.m., but residents of the trailer had made it outside safely through a back door.

They needed to escape through the back because the front of the house was already fully engulfed.

Apparently what caused the fire was a cigarette left burning in an unsafe ash tray that smoldered and caused the entrance to catch fire.

AFD controlled the fire within about 30 minutes, but the residence was a total loss.

Red Cross of Alaska is helping six people in need of assistance due to the fire, including a pregnant woman and a 7-month-old child.
