Yukon Quest race officials say Brent Sass is no longer in the race due to an injury sustained on the trail.

In a press release Sunday, officials said the 34-year-old musher is in stable condition following a head injury. Sass was assisted off the trail by Canadian Rangers, and is being taken to Whitehorse for further evaluation.

Sass and defending race champion Allen Moore were dueling for the race lead near the Braeburn checkpoint when Sass was thrown from his sled. Race officials say his team was brought into Braeburn after Sass was airlifted out, and is doing fine.

The 1,000 mile international race started Saturday, and will continue to its finish line near Whitehorse, Yukon Territory.
